Albania Nato news

September 19, 2008 – The American Jewish Committee (AJC), in a letter to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, supports ratification of the bilateral NATO protocols with the Albania and Croatia

“Albania and Croatia’s accession to NATO will recognize their achievements in building free and democratic societies and their contributions to the global fight against terrorism and religious extremism,” wrote AJC President Richard J. Sideman and Executive Director David A. Harris to Senator Joseph R. Biden, chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, and Sen. Richard G. Lugar, ranking member of the committee.

AJC has backed previous rounds of NATO enlargement. The letter also expressed hope that Macedonia will be invited to join soon.

The full text of the AJC letter to Senators Biden and Lugar follows:

On behalf of the American Jewish Committee (AJC), we write to express our wholehearted support for the ratification of the bilateral NATO protocols with the Republic of Albania and the Republic of Croatia.

As you know, both countries have completed their respective protocols after being officially invited to join the alliance in April. Albania and Croatia’s accession to NATO will recognize their achievements in building free and democratic societies and their contributions to the global fight against terrorism and religious extremism.

AJC has backed previous rounds of NATO enlargement, and we were proud to lend our support to the efforts of Albania, Croatia, and Macedonia to join the alliance. AJC has long appreciated NATO’s role in addressing global security challenges and safeguarding democratic structures, and we believe that the transatlantic partnership has been strengthened by the contributions of NATO’s newest members.

We also hope that Macedonia will be invited to join NATO at the earliest possible moment, as we believe it has similarly met the defense, economic, and socio-political requirements for accession.

We thank you for considering our position on this important matter.
